Hao Ming is a London-based Chinese artist, born in Shandong Province in 1996. A recent graduate of Camberwell College of Arts, University of the Arts London, his work humorously explores his experience as a Chinese foreign resident and a young man navigating a world shaped by social media and online culture.
Drawing on his background in illustration and graphic design, Ming's paintings resemble contemporary pop-art comics, but they are layered with social and political commentary. He tackles Chinese politics, the complexities of being a Chinese citizen in a "western" country, his longing for home, and how he experiences his culture while living in London.
On his canvases, Ming mixes symbols of popular culture—from boba tea to Chinese space rockets—with Chinese historical imagery, such as figures in dynastic garments. This blend reflects the artist's own grappling with how Chinese culture has both become a globalised part of everyday life and remains tied to a venerated, traditional past. Ultimately, his witty and colorful paintings serve as a commentary on the youngest generation's struggle to connect with their heritage in an internet-influenced world. Ming playfully alludes to politically subversive topics that shape the "western" world's understanding of China while interweaving them with symbols of Asian popular culture.
